School-wide Poetry Month: Day Ten (Leela)

I chose "Owl" because it was one of the first poems that I wrote this year, and I think it is simple enough to be read in a few seconds, yet at the same time powerful enough to stick with you for a long time. I think that it really shows the simple beauty of an owl, sitting in the shadows of the dead of the night.

Tasting Colonial Treats

On Monday, we divided into social studies book clubs where we'll be studying different topics from the colonial times. Our book clubs range from freedom of religion to slavery. One book club is studying food and gardening in colonial times. Inspired by what she read on Monday, Leela recreated a colonial recipe for butternut squash. She brought enough into the classroom for us all to try on Tuesday. It was delicious!

"Belly Up" Book Review (by Leela)

It’s the grand opening of the theme park, "Fun Jungle," and their mascot, Henry Hippo, is a big hit- no matter how grumpy he is.

Until Henry ends up dead. Teddy Fiztroy finds himself in the middle of a plot for money death and daughters.

After getting some highly classified info, he joins Summer on a case, which is far more dangerous than expected.

But, after finding the murder weapon—you have to find out who used the murder weapon—right?

Hold the phone! We have a development in the story!

More animals than Henry have died!!!!!!!!!!! I’ll give you a hint- almost all the animals that died were from the Amazon Rain forest!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With out giving anything else away, who would black mail someone into hiding the fact that they were smuggling emeralds?

Iroquois Values, Beliefs and Traditions

We synthesized all of our learning about the Iroquois by considering what we know about the values, beliefs and traditions of the Iroquois. We came up with so many ideas, both from our whole class lessons and from the books we've been exploring with our partners.  Thank you Jane, Ellis and Leela for designing these beautiful charts!
