One of our Animal Art lunch meetings!

2/3: (Notes by Emma) We met during recess again to discuss the project. We have 24 pictures now for the sale. Many kids are doing other types of work for the sale. Leela is making art with modeling clay. Chloe is making pottery with mosaics. Mayu is making bracelets Jane is making greeting cards with letters. Katie is going to find out if we can sell baked goods at our sale. Emma is thinking about playing violin or selling CD recordings of her playing. Ellis is going to make flip books.

We realize that the more time you put into a piece of art, the more money people will give for the art. We also know that we can really study an animal or picture of the animal so we can learn more about it before we draw it.

For locations, we're thinking about doing one sale at the school after school and another sale either in Park Slope or at Prospect Park on the weekend.

Next time we meet, we'll figure out who is going to make the flyers and who is going to write a letter asking the school for permission to do the sale. Katie is going to find out if we need a permit to have a table on the street in Park Slope. We also need to choose dates for the sale!

1/26: (Notes by Leela) We met during recess to discus the project. We have a lot of new art. We have 21 pictures to sell. Jason did a beautiful picture of a hippo. We decided that when you do a piece of art, you shouldn't put your last name on it. Emma used recycled paper for her art project, and that's a great idea! More people should think about using recycled paper when they do their art. We had an idea to write something on the back of the piece of art. We decided that great artists could donate art for our cause and for the sale. We also think we could put out a donation cup to collect donations during the sale.

We came up with some ideas for a charity to donate the money to. We had a lot of discussion about these ideas: Red Cross; Amazon Watch; Penny Harvest Charities; People in Africa; Blue Haired Cat Lady; Animals in our environment; Prospect Park or other parks in the city; the WWF (although we have reservations about this organization since it is such a big organization); homeless shelters; medical needs; city environment; Zoos (the Denver Zoo has a great endangered animal program); Animal Shelters (Chloe knows a great one). We'll talk more about these charities in the future!

Next time, we are going to make a list of who is doing work other than art so we can know what we will have for the sale. For example, Jane and Mayu are doing bracelets for the sale.

1/19: We had our first meeting for the Animal Art Project group at lunch today. Thanks to everyone for attending and for sharing your excellent ideas! We decided that unfinished art can go to Ava to hold. Mayu has a folder in her desk for all the finished pieces, so any 2-D pieces can go to her. If you have 3-D art pieces, such as sculpture or origami, leave them at home until closer to the date of the sale.

• Friendship bracelets
• Digital images made on the computer 
• Poems about animals/environmental issues
• A newspaper focused on animals and environmental issues 

Things to Think About: What charity should we donate the money we raise to? Bring any information you have about the charity to share with the group! Also, if you find any articles, pictures or videos that should be shared with the group, send them to Katie so she can post them here!
