School-Wide Poetry Month: Day 17 (Ms. Garraway)

My daughter wrote this poem when she was in fourth grade. I chose this poem because I love the way she used personification to bring an everyday object to life.

Letter to an Eraser

Dear Eraser,

How do you feel when people bite your skin?
How do you feel when people use your skin to clean
up words and to clean up drawings?
How do you feel when you are born pink and die black?
How do you feel when you are shaped like a
house, a soccer ball or a watermelon?
How do you feel being bright yellow, dark green or
rainbow colored?
How do you feel when you are stuck on a pencil?
How do you feel when you are free?
How does it feel when people poke holes in your
heart? Does it mean the end of your life?
You are strong as stone and as soft as a pillow!

How do you feel… being an eraser?
