This is our second week reading The Sisters Grimm: Fairy Tale Detectives. This week, we read from Chapter Four through Chapter Seven. Next week, our LAST week, we finish the book!
Questions to Ponder/Answer/Explore:
1. Last week, Leela wrote long about Ferryport Landing and the kind of town it was. Listen to her theories about the town. She said: "Ferryport Landing seems to be a town that's in a mask. A town that if you saw pictures of it, you would think, "This is a boring place," but then you take the mask off, and you find an adventurous town that's literally out of a fairy tale." She also said, "Ferryport Landing also seems to be a town of sides. You either like it there or you don't. you either belong, or you don't. You either get along with the people (or creatures) there, or you don't." What do you think about Leela's theories about the kind of place Ferryport Landing is? Can you add on or say more about her ideas?
2. Sabrina comes to some major realizations during this section about her parents, her grandmother, and her family history. Which realizations stand out to you as the most important? What do Sabrina's reactions to these realizations help you understand about Sabrina?
3. Puck is really a fascinating character. He describes himself as "royalty," "the spiritual leader to juvenile delinquents"and a star in Shakespeare's play. What is your impression of Puck? What kind of character is he? Why do you think Michael Buckley decided to include him in the story?
4. What theory are you growing about the book? Share it with us here so we can think about it too!
As always, remember to check back often to see your comments and the comments of your classmates. Ask each other questions, and really get a conversation going on here! This is a book where there is a TON to talk about!
I can add on to my thoughts from last week about Ferry port landing, because ferry port landing really is a place "Out of a fairytale," only, when people say that, they probably think of palaces, princesses, gleaming carriages and meadows and meadows of brightly colored flowers. But Ferry Port landing is out of a fairytale in a very unique way. Because when FerryPort landing came out of a fairytale, it brought the villains with it. And in that way, It's a town of truth, because living there is a real fairytale!
ReplyDeleteI think the most-major realization Sabrina makes is how much she loves her Granny, how much she realized she needs her Granny, how devastated Sabrina was when granny Relda was captured, and this shows me the love Sabrina must feel towards Daphne, because she was staying in her Tough-in charge mood, even though she could have been relaxing, because she wanted her sister safe and with her, her whole life.
My impression on Puck was that he was really dirty, very vain, but smart also, if not helpful.
A theory I had was "Everyone in the book needs family." because I think that theme really hangs over the book, with their parents gone, them just getting used to their grandmother, when she disappeared, and Sabina and Daphne being so much part of the others life.
This is a rhyme I made up for the mirror: Mirror, mirror, if you please, it would put my mind at ease, tell me where my parents are, are they near, or are they far?
-Leela
P.S. If Granny Relda had been to the giant kingdom before, how did she get away the other times?
Leela,
ReplyDeleteYour rhyme for the mirror perfectly captures your theory! More than anything it seems, Sabrina and Daphne want to have the family that was taken from them.
I'm not sure how Granny Relda got away from the giant kingdom before. Did you read anything in any of the other books in the series that might help you figure that out?
Your ideas about the kind of place Ferryport Landing is are really developing. I am definitely guilty of thinking only of the good characters when someone implies something is "out of a fairy tale." However, it's true that in Ferryport Landing, the villains came too! I can't wait to read what other people have to say about your theory!

This is about the city of ember, but I sent Jeanne Duprau and email and she sent back a response, and here it is:Dear Leela,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for writing to me! I'm glad you like The City of Ember. I hope you like the other books in the series, too!
Cheers to you,

Leela,
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to get a response! What did you ask her?
-Katie
I told her that I really enjoyed the city of ember, and asked her when she decided to become a writer.
